The War on Drugs’ texturally rich, guitar-driven rock calls to the past yet also feels timeless. The Philadelphia band, initially helmed by Adam Granduciel and Kurt Vile, broke onto the scene with their 2008 LP Wagonwheel Blues. Vile departed shortly thereafter, and Granduciel began pushing the limits of the band’s sound, introducing layered melodic synths to underscore their mesmerizing guitar licks. A few stellar records later, they won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Album for 2017’s A Deeper Understanding. Jump To: Top Stories.
The War on Drugs’ trick has always been keeping the foundations of a song simple, so that there’s plenty of breathing room for flourishes, be they lyrical or instrumental. There might be a saxophone blare here, a piano twinkle there, a crystallized drone that fades away as quickly as it crept in. Opener Under the Pressure takes this assembly-line thesis to heart. Despite my repeated use of words like haze and fog, this is also The War on Drugs’ most song-oriented album. Where as Wagonwheel Blues and Slave Ambient both devoted a third of their track listing to non-vocal, atmospheric tracks, Lost in the Dream has only one ( The Haunting Idle ), which leads into the ne roll of Burning. Yeah, yeah, that makes me the umpteenth critic to compare the band to The Boss, but it has to be said.
The War on Drugs’ fourth full-length operates with a bigger, bolder agenda-evident in the clattering electronics and hypnotic production of the nearly nine-minute opener, Under the Pressure. From there, Lost in the Dream unfolds with warm, melancholic rock that combines Granduciel’s mystical tenor with a blurry haze of vintage synths, chiming guitars, horn accents and reverb-soaked ambience. Uptempo tracks like Red Eyes and An Ocean in Between the Waves juxtapose pulsing, mechanical backbeats with droning synths.
