It was the first time since New Morning, in 1970, that Dylan had released more than five minutes of new music at once, and it was a gift to fans as well as to Peckinpah - little did anyone realize at the time that it heralded a period of new recording and a national tour (with the Band), along with. a brief label switch, and Dylan's greatest period of sustained musical visibility since 1966.

Album · 1973 · 10 Songs. This soundtrack to Sam Peckinpah’s 1973 western of the same name offers a rare glimpse of Dylan the film composer. Though it contains the outlaw ballad Billy and one of his most haunting songs, the elegiac Knockin' on Heaven’s Door, most of this acoustic-based album is occupied by atmosphere-laden instrumentals. From the gentle, almost stately Bunkhouse Theme to the speedy, bluegrass-tinged Turkey Chase, you can almost see the Mexican dust kicking up around the boot heels of the movie’s hard-bitten desperados and lawmen
In that light, the original soundtrack of Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid is an extension of its myth-destroying predecessor Self-Portrait, a record which further eliminates the possibility of anyone placing Bob Dylan on a pedestal. It is every bit as inept, amateurish and embarrassing as the earlier album. And it has all the earmarks of a deliberate courting of commercial disaster, a flirtation that is apparently part of an attempt to free himself from previously imposed obligations derived from his audience
