Complete your Patrick Watson collection. referencing Close To Paradise, LP, Album, RE, 180, SCR002LP. Side B is pressed off-center on my copy. Still tracks ok on my Rega, but definitely disappointing. The album is well produced, arrangement clever. As I'm a fan of the old big band from the 70's, I can feel some influences, but it's not a copy of all those bands. No, this LP sounds actual : a very nice piece of music, sort of little opera sometimes.
Before starting his quartet, Patrick Watson explored a variety of musical forms, from rock to electronica, and though Close to Paradise is clean indie pop, these other influences show up in the album frequently

Make no mistake, there are pop gems that are happy to stand on their own like 'Giver', 'Luscious Life' or 'Drifters', but 'Bright Shiny Lights' is that much more uplifting after you take the trip that is 'Sleeping Beauty'.

Close to Paradise, Watson's second album, emerged triumphant after the panel of Canadian critics failed to choose between the overwhelmingly better choices: Arcade Fire, Feist, the Besnard Lakes, Junior Boys, Julie Doiron, the Dears and Chad VanGaalen. While plenty of WTFing went down in the wake of Watson's win, a few listens to Paradise lend support to the album as a generic consensus pick. On his MySpace page, Watson lists among his influences Nick Drake, Jeff Buckley, Björk, John Coltrane, David Lynch, Claude Debussy, and Erik Satie.
You’re close to paradise. You close your eyes and daydream. The man sorrowfully looks around the room and sings, everybody needs somebody // to hold them down // when your feet are leaving the ground . The words fly by your ears and although you don’t understand their message, you recognize the feeling of longing. Relaxed yet subtly yearning for something you slip into your skin, now worn and snug. The man glances at you with a smile and you begin to wonder how long he has noticed your presence, but his demeanor radiates nothing but delight . ikr?? it's been needing one for so long.
