Calm/Peaceful Reserved. The Modern Jazz Quartet. Under the Jasmin Tree. A more unlikely match of artists and label you will rarely find - the dignified, classically influenced, indelibly Afro-American Modern Jazz Quartet and the Beatles' Apple Corps, Ltd. But Apple in its Rocking '60s heyday was one of the most daringly eclectic labels on the scene, and as the sole jazz act on the roster, the MJQ was given complete.

The Modern Jazz Quartet. Exclusive Prime pricing. Under The Jasmin Tree, Space. In 1968, the LP, Under the Jasmin Tree, introduced me to MJQ. I soon obtained other recordings of this unique chamber jazz ensemble, but while all were very good indeed, none had the spark of this first album, and I purchased the remastered CD in 1993. This album was merely 35 minutes in duration. The second half of this present compilation, Space, does not match the verve and originality of the first. Venus is too spacey, Mars is just OK, the adagio of Concerto de Aranjuez was and remains overdone, and this version is not especially good.
Apple's 2010 reissue of the Modern Jazz Quartet's recordings for the label pairs 1968's Under the Jasmin Tree and 1969's Space, adding a previously unreleased version of "Yesterday" as a bonus track. Audio Remasterers: Sam Okell; Alex Wharton. Liner Note Author: Andy Davis. Recording information: Trident Studios, London

NotesRe-issue of 1968 Apple LP, by the World Record Club, pressed and released in New Zealand. Cover basically same as original Apple release in New Zealand (and rest of world),but of lesser quality, with the variant in label information on rear. Black/orange strobe label, with "stereo" absent from the top. The address combination, along with evidence from other New Zealand (and Australian) WRC releases of the time, strongly suggests early 1973 as the date of issue. "SLZ.8485" on labels, "SLZ 8485" on rear of sleeve.
