Redirected from Off the Wall (album)). Off the Wall is the fifth solo studio album by American singer Michael Jackson, released on August 10, 1979 in the United States by Epic Records and internationally by CBS Records.
Off the Wall’ helped transform him from teenybopper to ‘The King of Pop’. Up Next From Culture. Toward his goal of shedding his teenybopper image, Jackson teamed with legendary producer Quincy Jones to record a make-or-break solo album, his first as an adult, titled Off the Wall. The LP would feature three original compositions that Jackson hoped would earn him entry into the pantheon of trailblazing R&B singer/songwriters, including James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and Sly Stone. Having charted a fresh musical direction for himself, only one thing remained unresolved - he needed an image that would signal his newfound maturity to the world.
Michael Jackson had recorded solo prior to the release of Off the Wall in 1979, but this was his breakthrough, the album that established him as an artist of astonishing talent and a bright star in his own right. This was a visionary album, a record that found a way to break disco wide open into a new world where the beat was undeniable, but not the primary focus - it was part of a colorful tapestry of lush ballads and strings, smooth soul and pop, soft rock, and alluring funk.

The Off The Wall album sold over 10 million copies and make Michael Jackson the first solo artist with four US Top 10 hits from the same album. In addition to the title track, "Rock With You" ( "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" ( and "She's Out Of My Life" ( also made the Top 10. Jackson's appearance started to change shortly after the album was released, as he started his run of plastic surgery. By the time Off The Wall was reissued in 2001, Jackson looked nothing like his former self, and the cover used just the image of his feet.
This album changed the game in a lot of ways, but most especially where it comes to the music-video genre. In short, it was a work of genius. While Thriller is itself a masterpiece, it is by no means Michael’s best album. Of course, my saying this in Slack this morning started a big debate with my co-workers.
