It wasn't until the 1950's, when Joe Morello entered the scene, that Rich had a viable technical adversary. While this album has a dated sound, it is filled with a lot of fiery drum solos, and exquisite horn work. A gem for anybody who loves vigorous, spirited big band music. Recorded over two sessions between 1973, 1974.

The Buddy Rich Big Band in the 1940s. In addition to Tommy Dorsey (1939–42, 1945, 1954–55), Rich played with Benny Carter (1942), Harry James (1953–56–62, 1964, 1965), Les Brown, Charlie Ventura, Jazz at the Philharmonic, and Charlie Parker (Bird and Diz, 1950). From 1966 until his death, he led successful big bands in an era when their popularity had waned. He performed a big-band arrangement of a medley from West Side Story that was released on the 1966 album Swingin' New Big Band. The "West Side Story Medley" is a complex big-band arrangement which highlights Rich's ability to blend the rhythm of his drumming into his band's playing of the musical chart
