The Family of Man was an ambitious photography exhibition curated by Edward Steichen, the director of the New York City Museum of Modern Art's (MoMA) Department of Photography. It was first shown in 1955 from January 24 to May 8 at the New York MoMA, then toured the world for eight years to record-breaking audience numbers. They recognized each other.

John Graham continually bought and sold land throughout Washington County after he first arrived shortly before 1940, amassing up to 15,00 acres at one point. Most of it he did not keep for long, like the piece of land the Lewis family bought from him, but John Graham and his family continued to own some land in what would become the West 200 acres of Camp for over 50 years until shortly after his death in th 1890’s.

The traditional family reunion at Jesse's New Jersey meadow is taking place in mid summer on his farm. The writer talks about the picnic, the games, the family members from aged Aunt Eula to the unborn child of a pregnant cousin. They have existed as a group, however varied, for generations. The family has added to America's statistics without altering their meaning, always close to a farm, existing between poverty and wealth in honorable obscurity.
