Switched On is the simplest of the three. Released in the fall of 1992 five months after Stereolab’s introductory album, Peng!, it compiles Stereolab’s first three singles from 1991- Super-Electric, Stunning Debut Album, and Super 45. The band was still a tidy quartet: drummer Joe Dilworth (of th’ Faith Healers), bassist Martin Kean (formerly of the Chills ), t Tim Gane, and Laetitia Sadier singing sweetly in French and English about topics plucked from a grad student’s dog-eared textbooks. Released 11 months after Mars, the collection Refried Ectoplasm (Switched On Volume 2) captures the run-up to that peak. Stereolab are clearly testing the proportions of their sound, balancing the rough, the smooth, and the sly. Harmonium -a 1992 single by the power trio of Gane, Sadier, and Dilworth-is a grinding slab of maximalist minimalism in full Suicide mode.

Stereolab are an English-French avant-pop band formed in London in 1990. On stage, they play in a more feedback-driven and guitar-oriented style

Switched On. Stereolab. Switched On Tracklist. 1. Super Electric Lyrics.

Switched On collects Stereolab's earliest singles, capturing the group's hypnotic, driving sound in its infancy. Though they're more guitar-driven and rock-oriented than the band's later work, tracks like "Super-Electric" and "Au Grand Jour" prove that Stereolab's basic style - Krautrock lock-grooves, bubbling analog synths, fuzzed-out guitars, and angelic vocals - arrived fully formed. Doubt" and "Brittle" are among the group's most vibrant pop songs, while the eight-minute "Contact" is a warm-up for the epics.

Stereolab – Switched On Volumes 1-3. Jon Dale. Stereolab’s roots appeared to be in indie-pop and C86 – guitarist and songwriter Tim Gane was in agit-pop gang McCarthy; he met singer and lyricist Laetitia Sadier after a gig in France. They soon became a couple, with Sadier relocating to London and the pair forming Stereolab in 1990, with Martin Kean, who had played bass in New Zealand pop group The Chills, and drummer Joe Dilworth, who was also working as a photographer: those are his bleached, white-out photos on the cover of My Bloody Valentine’s Isn’t Anything
