Beat music, British beat, or Merseybeat (after bands from Liverpool and nearby areas beside the River Mersey) is a popular music genre of rock and roll that developed in the United Kingdom in the early 1960s. The exact origins of the terms 'beat music' and 'Merseybeat' are uncertain

Double Feature! THE STORY OF MERSEYBEAT 1985 . Detailed history of Merseybeat from Skiffle boom to full blown British Invasion. Cool and rare footage! Gerry & the Pacemakers, the Fourmost, the Merseybeats, the Beatles and more. BEAT CITY 1963 Dec-24-63.

Merseybeat - Various Artists. These are all brought together with a welter of cult classics and intriguing oddities.

By "unearthed Merseybeat," Viper Records doesn't just mean obscure Merseybeat, but unheard Merseybeat. Virtually all of these 20 tracks were previously unreleased, though one of them (Wimple Winch's "Rumble on Mersey Square South") has made it onto some mod-psychedelic reissue compilations.

When The Beatles returned to the UK in 1961 after a number of performances in Hamburg, they were at the fore of the city’s ever-growing Merseybeat scene. Following a run of shows at The Cavern Club, they were spotted by Brian Epstein, who would later go on to become the band’s official manager in 1962. Initially rejected by Decca Records, Epstein would then sign the band to EMI’s Parlophone label and in June initiated their first recording session at Abbey Road Studios. In October of the same year, The Beatles’ first single ‘Love Me Do’ peaked at Number 17 on the Record Retailer chart
