Claudia Schmidt (born 1953) is a musician, originally from New Baltimore, Michigan, who has recorded folk, jazz, blues, and spoken word albums. She plays guitar and Appalachian dulcimer and sings. She has appeared numerous times on the radio program, A Prairie Home Companion. Style:MLA Chicago APA. "Claudia Schmidt Album.

Claudia Schmidt's recording career got off to an impressive start with this self-titled effort, which wasn't well-known in the pop market but was highly regarded in folk circles. Combining folk with everything from blues and country to pop, the Chicago-based singer brought a great deal of charisma and honesty to originals like "Lady," "Whale Song," and "Fuzzy" as well as the traditional "Horse Thief.

The album Claudia Schmidt (1979) is an ideal introduction to her work. It’s a wild array of material, including, of all things, a cover of If I Only Had a Brain from The Wizard of Oz. As for Schmidt’s songwriting, there’s no mistaking her solid folk chops in the jig-time Drinking Buddy. This song deals with what would become a recurrent theme in her songwriting career, an appreciation of what other people offer of themselves. In other words, friendship.

"You are magic, full of magic things." Claudia Schmidt on her debut album in 1979 showed why she stood alone in the Chicago folk music revival scene of the 70's. A clear strong sweet voice with a gift for interpreting and inventing traditional and newly infectious tunes were her hallmarks. She also took a cue from fellow Flying Fish recording artist, Ken Bloom, and showed off some unusual instruments in her sets. Joni's dulcimer has nothing on Claudia's pianolin. Listen to this collection of originals, traditionals, and unexpected treasures by Yip Harburg and Buddy Johnson. What a treat. She was on a journey from coffeehouse to cabaret, and this album catches her magic in its grooves.
