That’s a bold statement, and then some, but I won’t lie and say I can’t see where these critics were coming from. This was an album that achieved immediate classic status within most circles of Hip Hop and it became clear, we had a new star. Produced by Atmosphere’s Ant, this was one of the most breathtaking albums in many years.

Underground hip hop is an umbrella term for hip hop music outside the general commercial canon. It is typically associated with independent artists, signed to independent labels or no label at all. Underground hip hop is often characterized by socially conscious, positive, or anti-commercial lyrics.
Underground hip-hop doesn’t exist anymore, at least not like it used to. It’s hard to pinpoint exactly what happened, but some time right around when indie rock became a genre instead of an indication of label affiliation, underground hip-hop ceased to exist in the way that we had always known it. Maybe it was when Def Jux died. Maybe it was when underground was replaced with internet buzz acts on the fast track to major label deals. Dilated Peoples are devestatingly consistent, but Expansion Team didn’t take one misstep, and it remains the underground staples’ best album. There’s nothing flashy about it, nothing particularly innovative, but that’s part of it’s appeal: it’s firmly rooted in the elemental basics of hip-hop, and it nails them effortlessly. With so many rap crews trying so hard to be something, sound a certain way, or jump on some new wave, Dilated Peoples always just made hip-hop.
Unlike their mainstream counterparts, underground hip hop is exactly what it sounds like: rappers who haven't quite hit the mainstream, yet retain a strong, devoted following. The best underground rappers are generally independent rappers who are signed either to an indie label or no label at all and whose lyrical matter discusses either social issues, political issues and other types anti-excess subjects. So, who are the best underground rappers? When you think of underground hip hop artists, some of the big names (at least by underground rap standards) are Big L, Aesop Rock, Dead Prez, Madlib, El-P, Atmosphere and Blackalicious. These are some of the most respected names in rap music.
