A number of artists contributed to the invention of Bebop . And on this very fine live recording from 1947, they had been performed together quite a bit, and they play simultaneously with intensity and ease. John is an excellent musician who had and would play with them a lot, including in Dizzy’s adventurous big band. And Al McKibbon not only played with everybody on the scene, but did it for decades.

The Charlie Parker 10th Memorial Concert was recorded March 27, 1965, 10 years after the death of Charlie Parker, at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Its A&R director was Bobby Scott and it was released on Limelight Records the same year. It has yet to be reissued on CD. It also marks Dave Lambert's final recordings. 1. "Um-Hmm! (Ode to Yard)" (7:00). 2. "Groovin' High" (5:50). Same personnel except Moody play alto sax.
During 1949-54 Charlie Parker often recorded and performed with a string section. This LP contains a cross section of Bird's live performances from 1950-52 and, although the string arrangements are the same as for the studio recordings, Parker's solos are quite a bit different. Pity there's no live version of "Just Friends," his most successful string recording. It's not quite essential music but worth picking up.
Recorded live at Carnegie Hall on September 29, 1947. Tracks 1-5 were performed by a quintet; tracks 6-15 were performed by a big band. Thanks to snobb for the addition. The Parker/Gillespie set presented on here consists of five tunes, followed by another ten for Dizzy’s big band. Those five opening tunes by the quintet are the highlight, Parker’s playing is absolutely phenomenal, some of his best ever captured on a recording. Also, the bad sound issues are not nearly as bothersome with the smaller group than with the full orchestra that will follow.
