Wes Montgomery continues to be a phenomenon 50 years after these tracks were recorded. To put it bluntly, Wes Montgomery is the greatest jazz guitarist to ever live. If you're already a Wes or jazz fan you'll see why from the very first track. Perhaps the best is saved for last, with a bit of a slower tempo on "Twisted Blues", which first appeared on his great album "So Much Guitar!" in 1961. There exists another version with a horn section, but this reading is better, allowing ample time for trade off solos, including the only bass solo by Arthur Harper, and showcasing the amazing synchronicity needed to do this piece justice.
TITLE added to MP3 cart. In Paris: The Definitive Ortf Recording. It may seem sacrilege to put any live album on the level of "Smokin' At The Half-Note", but I believe it is just as great. Wes used a different lineup for this tour from the Wynton Kelley Group he would use after returning to the States, but the band is absolutely stunning. With Harold Mabern on piano, Arthur Harper on bass and drummer Jimmy Lovelace, along with a few guest solos by sax player Johnny Griffin, every person plays brilliantly.

Wes In Paris CD Cover. In Paris: The Definitive ORTF Recording is a double album recorded on March 27, 1965 during Montgomery's first and only concert in the City of Light. First released on vinyl last November, it will be released digitally and as a 2-CD set on January 26. Wes appears alongside pianist Harold Mabern, bassist Arthur Harper and drummer Jimmy Lovelace, with special guest Johnny Griffin on tenor sax. As guitarist Russell Malone says in the superb notes that accompany any Resonance release: "This man is on some other stuff here from Paris! He stretched out, chorus after.
Mastered by LP mastering icon Bernie Grundman and pressed by Record Technology Inc. (RTI). The album features an all-star band with venerable post-bop pianist Harold Mabern, bassist Arthur Harper and bebop drummer Jimmy Lovelace, along with special guest tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin (who played on another classic live Wes recording from 1962, Full House)
