1947, Mahler: Symphony No. 5), Hermann Scherchen on Westminster (1953, Mahler: Symphony No. 5 in C Sharp Minor) and Rudolf Schwarz for Everest, the first one in stereo (1958, Mahler: Symphony No. 5 ~ Schwarz). I came to Bernstein's Mahler symphony cycle - the first complete one - as a college student in the late 60s. These recordings were as much a part of that decade as the Beatles, Stones, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison. Bernstein was already established, but Mahler was not, if you can believe it.

The Bernstein–Mahler cycle usually refers to two separate audio recordings of the symphonies of composer Gustav Mahler, as performed by conductor Leonard Bernstein in the 1960s and 1980s respectively. Bernstein's first Mahler cycle was the first (of now many) complete Mahler cycles with symphonies 1-9 recorded between 1960 and 1967 on the CBS now Sony label

The New York Philharmonic Orchestra has a particularly great Mahler tradition that dates back to the composer leading the orchestra in 1909. On this recording, Leonard Bernstein directs the orchestra in the Symphony N., a performance that is part of the Bernstein Century series on Sony. A great proponent of Mahler's music, Bernstein was one of the first conductors to record all of the composer's symphonies. The Fifth Symphony is the last work Mahler wrote before a world of grief fell upon him and his family.

Gustav Mahler, Symphony No. 5 in C-sharp Minor. 1. Trauermarsch: in gemessenem Schritt. Klaus Tennstedt, who became the London Philharmonic Orchestra's music director in 1983, recorded the complete Mahler symphonies with the orchestra between 1977 and 1986. A recording of the First Symphony in 1977 left critics underwhelmed, but recordings of the Fifth and Ninth won considerable plaudits.
