Revenge! Robbie Fulks. Released May 1, 2007.
Album · 2007 · 23 Songs. But Fulks is best appreciated live, and this 23-track live collection captures him in his natural habitat. The band is looser, Fulks is quicker and the tunes take on an energy that can’t be replicated in the quiet, professional setting of a recording studio. Feeding off the audience’s energy, Fulks delivers his lines with extra panache.
On the opening cut of Robbie Fulks' album Revenge, Fulks and his band are interrupted while singing about the dubious joys of life on tour by a phone call from one of the head honchos at Yep Roc Records, who informs Fulks that the label wants a new record, but it has to be delivered fast and cheap since his previous effort. didn't move that many units. All of which serves as a curious but entertaining set-up for this double-disc live album, divided into a "Standing" set with a full electric band and a "Sitting" acoustic set featuring minimal accompaniment.
Revenge! is the new release from Robbie Fulks, a 2-disc, 23-track "live record" that invests that term with fresh thinking. The other has Robbie in an acoustic cabaret setting, and highlights his Carolina-bred flat picking and communicative dynamism. Fifteen years of recording and alt-country's smartest smartass has never released a live album or a greatest-hits collection (the odds 'n' sods Very Best Of doesn't count). This two-disc set just about settles the score. On disc one, a good slice of Fulks's best songs gets the full roots-rock-weirdo treatment with his longtime road band: the closing triad "Rock Bottom, Pop. 1," "Cigarette State," and "Let's Kills Saturday Night" shows Fulks on top of his skewed country-rock game.
