Hot Rats, Frank Zappa's brilliant 1969 offering, is just about the perfect introduction to the genius of this American musical colossus. For one thing, there are no lyrics (except for Captain Beefheart on Willie the Pimp), so for those of you who object to Zappaesque dirty songs, no worries. The point is Zappa pulled this somewhat disparate group of players and produced what many music historians consider the first true "fusion" album. Let it be said that this was not Zappa's intent. He just had some songs, some penned by him, at least one by Don Preston, one by Beefheart, that he just yearned to hear performed well.
Zappa decided to seek out Varèse's music. Not having enough money with him, he persuaded the salesman to sell him the record at a discount. 30–33 Thus began his lifelong passion for Varèse's music and that of other modern classical composers. After he disbanded the Mothers of Invention, Zappa released the acclaimed solo album Hot Rats (1969). 194 It features, for the first time on record, Zappa playing extended guitar solos and contains one of his most enduring compositions, "Peaches en Regalia", which reappeared several times on future recordings. 74 He was backed by jazz
Frank Zappa’s second solo album and first album following the breakup of The Mothers Of Invention is a swirling showcase of complete mastery over psychedelic music. With only one track featuring vocals ( Willie The Pimp ), Hot Rats proved to be more a successful experiment rather an album. While much of it consists of eery instrumental transitions and searing guitar solos, songs like It Must Be A Camel are on the jazzier side, showing Zappa’s consistent strength in versatility, and his chameleon-like ability to blend into any musical landscape.
