Only for completionists (25%). McCarty's first solo album serves up a consistent vision of soft crossover prog without a trace of guile. If some of the more commercially successful 1970s bands of this sub genre had gone this route, there might have been fewer chart appearances but greater respect for prog as a whole. Out of the Dark" positively illuminates what might have been.

James Stanley McCarty (born 25 July 1943) is an English musician, best known as the drummer for the Yardbirds and Renaissance. Following Chris Dreja's departure from the Yardbirds in 2013 McCarty became the only member of the band to appear in all of its incarnations. He was born at Walton Hospital in Liverpool, England, but his family moved to London when he was two years old. He attended Hampton School in Hampton where Paul Samwell-Smith was a fellow pupil
Back in '65, we were experimenting with our sound. Experimenting in sounds and experimenting with different rhythms, changing rhythms within songs. Jim: Well, the "Shapes of Things" was very much about the state of the situation in the country with the Vietnam War, so it was sort of an anti-war song. Over Under Sideways Down" was more about the situation of having a good time - a bit of decadence, really - in the '60s. And, in fact, Roger (Cameron), the engineer of the album, we did one of our first albums, it was originally called The Yardbirds, and we recorded that in about a week in the studio. And a lot of it was written at the time, so we sort of made it up as we went along, and it was great fun.
Jim McCarty is best known as the drummer for the pioneering British blues-rock band the Yardbirds, and deservedly so: he was the only member to play in every incarnation of the group from its 1963 foundation through a '90s reunion that brought the band into the 21st century. Despite this considerable legacy, McCarty did a lot outside of the Yardbirds, exploring prog rock in the wake of the group's disbandment - he immediately played with his fellow Yardbird Keith Relf in Renaissance, then with Illusion in the '70s - and experimenting with new age music in the '90s. As the band wound down, McCarty released his first solo album, Out of the Dark, in 1994. As he worked with Stairway, McCarty agreed to a live Yardbirds reunion with Chris Dreja.
