As one of the world's leading pianists, Vladimir Ashkenazy offered important interpretations in his recordings for London of Ludwig van Beethoven 's 32 piano sonatas; as this 1995 box set reissue shows, his contributions to the catalog still have great staying power. Recorded throughout the 1970s, these performances were originally released as LPs, and listeners following the charismatic pianist were treated to a new album of sonatas nearly on an annual basis.

Recorded in London: 1971 (Sonata 32), 1972 (Sonata 31) 1973 (Sonatas 21, 26), 1974 (Sonatas 3, 30) 1976 (Sonatas 2, 5, 6, 15, 17, 28) 1977 (Sonatas 14, 16, 18) 1978 (Sonatas 11, 12, 13, 22, 23, 27) 1979 (Sonatas 1, 4, 7, 9, 10, 24, 25) 1980 (Sonatas 8, 19, 20, 29) 1981 (Andante favori).

Ludwig van Beethoven wrote his 32 piano sonatas between 1795 and 1822. Although originally not intended to be a meaningful whole, as a set they compose one of the most important collections of works in the history of music. Hans von Bülow called them "The New Testament" of the piano literature (Johann Sebastian Bach's The Well-Tempered Clavier being "The Old Testament").
