Orphx: Pitch black mirror. And that was always a real struggle for us," adds Richard Oddie, her partner in the duo Orphx. I really enjoyed the vocal dimension on your last album for Sonic Groove and HANDS. Is this a new thing or part of this cyclical development that's been going on since the beginning? Richard Oddie: Well, the early material has vocals-more screams and some spoken word-but yeah, that was a really conscious decision with that record. And in terms of genre-blending, I think it was more of an opening. With some of the Sonic Groove records, for example, we got closer to techno than we've ever been before.

Orphx works has become much more interesting since their breakcore period especially the circuitbreaking work last decade. The sonic groove series were fantastic and this one is getting very close: Dark psychedelic, intoxicating rhytmical soundscapes in best tradition of Tresor, Force Inc & co.

I don't think Orphx was really ever breakcore although they were definitely more noisy.I like this album, but I was kind of disappointed by their previous Sonic Groove label EPs (well, I do rate the first one highly, but my favorite track on it (the remix by Surgeon) was previously released on Hands anyway) since it sounded like their music was heading in a more conventional techno direction appealing to followers and tastemakers of the so-called "underground" techno scene (the Berghain and Boiler Room kinds of crowds, the readers and writers of Resident Advisor and Fact) as they were adopted by that part of the techno scene after those people grew tired of the turn-of-the-century "minimal" tech-house sound. It has been interesting to see that scene's turnabout in tastes during this current decade and their shift to favoring a less clean/more lo-fi sound and/or favoring hardware production over laptop production (from the modular synth craze to a renewed interest in old hardware) and/or revisiting 90s techno and 80s electronic body music and "industrial" sounds, etc.
