Billy Bishop Goes to War is a Canadian musical, written by John MacLachlan Gray in collaboration with the actor Eric Peterson. One of the most widely produced plays in Canadian theatre, the two-man play dramatizes the life of Canadian World War I fighter pilot Billy Bishop. One member of the cast plays the part of Bishop in word and song, although he is also called upon to dramatize 17 other parts; the second cast member provides all the accompaniment on the piano and also sings.

Like the man himself, Billy Bishop Goes to War grew from humble beginnings into a Canadian icon. It all started when actor Eric Peterson (now familiar to many Canadians as the cantankerous Oscar Leroy in Corner Gas) lent a book to fellow actor and composer/writer John Gray while the two were working with Theatre Passe Muraille in Toronto. In a 2009 interview with the CBC, Gray said he was struck by how Bishop had been kind of forgotten, especially in the anti-war movement
Like all major developments in the -counting evolution of the Canadian musical play Billy Bishop Goes to War, the opportunity came from out of the blue, and under singular circumstances. Planning a season is an enterprise of enormous complexity, in which a sort of ecological balance must be achieved among dozens of variables – personal, technical, financial, cosmetic; losing one show doesn’t just create a hole in the season, it throws the whole ecology out of whack, like what happens to the balance of nature when a particular species goes extinct. If Schultz failed to find a replacement with a roughly similar cast, technical requirements, and cost, he would have to redesign his entire lineup, and there wasn’t time for that.
Eric Peterson (born May 14, 1964) is an American guitarist, best known as a member of the American thrash metal band Testament and is the only remaining original member left in the band, which first started in 1982 under the name Legacy. He and vocalist Chuck Billy are the only members to appear on all of the band's studio albums. Peterson also has a side project black metal band called Dragonlord, in which he plays guitar and also sings.

Billy Bishop, a failing Canadian military college student, overcomes intense prejudice from British High Command and astonishing danger to become the most successful fighter pilot of his generation. This ‘incredibly moving’ (LondonTheatre1) production interrogates the nature of heroism and its cost while shining a light on the often-neglected complexities of Britain’s colonial past.
