Origin of Symmetry is Muse’s second studio album. The LP wasn’t officially released in the US until 2005 because Maverick Records (their stateside label) wanted the band to remove Matt’s trademark falsetto, but the band refused. A towering 51-minute exploration of progressive rock with heavy bass riffs, dark lyrics, and a unified sound, Origin of Symmetry is objectively regarded by many Muse fans as the band’s best album. The development of the album came about during the band’s extensive touring in promotion of Showbiz, with some of the material written and performed whilst on the road
Origin of Symmetry" by Muse took me a few listens to see how fun and experimental this album really is. This album was released in 2001 and this is Muse's sophomore effort. I don't have their debut album yet so I can't say if "Origin of Symmetry" is stronger or weaker than "Showbiz". This album is very different than the ones that follow this like "Absolution" and "Black Holes and Revelations". This record is slightly lo-fi and more alternative rock-sounding.

To give Origin of Symmetry some context, it was the album that pushed Muse into upper echelons of the charts; a set that marked Matt Bellamy’s lyrics out as speaking defiantly, ponderously, on behalf of Muse’s ever-growing fanbase. And Bellamy’s voice is intelligent and familiar, his cold grandiosity spreading like wildfire as the album plays out. Listening to this with the benefit of hindsight shows Darkshines to be a skeletal foreshadow of Black Holes and Revelations’ Hoodoo, for its falsetto and aggravation. Instruments crash before they burst, with Citizen Erased going the furthest in mimicking feelings of desolation.
