Rufus Wainwright's Mark Ronson-produced seventh album represents the singer's return to more formal song structure, but it also marks a break from the florid, operatic pop that defined his first five albums. While Out of the Game certainly represents Wainwright's return to more formal song structure, it marks a clean break from the florid and operatic pop that more or less defined his first five albums. Thanks in no small part to the presence of producer Mark Ronson, the bombastic orchestral pieces and the fluttering ariettas have been swapped out with an armory of peeling guitar licks and 1970s-inflected AOR grooves. Anyone with a mildly frayed birth certificate and a passing history with FM radio will get the touchpoints; Steely Dan, 10cc, Wings, ELO.

Rufus Wainwright's 2012 studio effort, Out of the Game, is a '70s singer/songwriter album with some soft rock and disco and elements that bring to mind a mix of Boz Scaggs, ELO, and Todd Rundgren. Produced by Mark Ronson, the master of making retro new again, Out of the Game has a vintage, organic aesthetic featuring horns, old-school keyboards, strings, and the occasional fuzzed-out guitar

Just bought a copy and have the same problem as others listed here. I've e-mailed the record label, fingers crossed they can solve..!
  • Light out of Fildon
Same problem as cincgats and a few others around the Internet have posted regarding the Decca US vinyl: Side 3 was made with the wrong stamper. It's actually Side 3 of Florence + the Machine's "Ceremonials." At the bottom of the back of the record jacket the catalog # is also wrong: B0016299-01. (That's the catalog # for Ceremonials.)The matrix/runout for my copy was this:Side 1: UGCR-00246ASide 2: UGCR-00246BSide 3: B0016299-01-LP2ASide 4: UGCR-00246DDon't buy this LP new or used without having the seller open up their copy first. If the matrix for Side 3 matches the above, walk away. I returned mine and have never been able to find out if correct copies were made.

I bought the Decca vinyl and side 3 (with "Bitter Tears" etc) was MISPRESSED. It was not Rufus, but some female singer for the entire side. Side 4 went back to Rufus. Bizarre... is this just a problem with the copy I have or is this a serious mistake with all of the vinyl versions for this album?
  • GoodBuyMyFriends
No, I wound up with not one, but two mispressed copies of "Game" (I tried to replace the first with a second copy from the same shop) with side three being all Florence + the Machine songs. Decca sent me a replacement (which was correct) but the Decca rep I corresponded with didn't seem to think it was a widespread problem. Very strange. Not sure if it'll be worth anything, though, as it's only 3/4 of a complete album.

Interesting! Just checked - my copy plays what it's supposed to play ...

Can anyone add more pics of the vinyl itself and the double-sided insert?
