Barrett originally wrote the song around verses from Hilaire Belloc's Cautionary Tales, in which a series of naughty children, including Matilda, receive their (often gruesome) comeuppance Later release. On the Masters of Rock compilation album, the song was misspelled "Mathilda Mother".
