Alfia Nakipbekova (cello), Alfia Nakipbekova (cello) & Jakob Fichert (piano). Intricate contrapuntal dialogue in the Cello Sonata pays obvious homage to Brahms and Reger. Dedicated playing from Alfia Nakipbekova and Jakob Fichert. BBC Music Magazine, June 2012, Mor. elease Date: 23rd Apr 2012. Hans Gál (1890–1987) was born in one of the suburbs of Vienna and was one of the most successful composers in Austria and Germany when Hitler came to power. The Jewish Gál was forced to flee to Britain with his family in 1938, whereupon a meeting with Donald Tovey brought him to Edinburgh, where he became a much-loved figure in his adoptive town. These three works demonstrate that he never lost his Viennese fondness for melody: his music is predominantly lyrical, within a contrapuntal framework, appealing to head and heart alike. The Sonata for Cello and Piano, Op.

Hans Gál is now healthily represented on disc, a state of affairs that looks set to continue given, in particular, the discs of symphonies, chamber music and solo piano music that have been issued of late. The latest disc by the composer to come my way is the music for cello. The Sonatas for Cello solo 109a and 109b were written in 1982 and are amongst the very last works completed by Gál, then in his early 90s. O. 09a is written in three movements and evokes Bach but wholly within Gál’s frame of reference
