A standing eight count, also known as a protection count, is a boxing judgment call made by a referee during a bout. When invoked, the referee stops the action and counts to eight. During that time the referee will determine if the boxer can continue. When the count reaches eight, the referee often moves back two steps and instructs the boxer to walk towards them and hold their arms out. This helps the referee determine if the boxer is functioning and alert enough to continue.

Standing Eight may also be seen as Morrissey's super session. But this is clearly Morrissey's show from start to finish, and he's wise enough to give his famous pals the slack they need to contribute some tight, winning performances (Shawn Colvin's especially good on "She's That Kind of Mystery").

For nearly a decade Brisbane group The Standing 8 Counts assaulted audiences with their unparallelled brand of wall-of-sound rock'n'roll. On a good night The 8 Counts created a shit-storm of noise and on a great night they built a sonic vacuum to overshadow even Phil Spector. With a multiple guitar attack and shimmering backbeat that hit your loins with waves of rock'n'roll lust, they were the reckless abandon before us that we dreamed of in our own lives.
