Preoccupations are a Canadian post-punk band, that formed in Calgary, Alberta in 2012 under the name Viet Cong. The group consists of two ex-members of the rock band Women, vocalist/bassist Matt Flegel and drummer Mike Wallace, as well as guitarists Scott Munro and Daniel Christiansen. The group's musical style has been described as "labyrinthine post-punk".
On their first album as Preoccupations, they live up to their moniker to an almost scary degree, sounding engrossed in thought to the point of pathological obsession. With a sense of urgency and unease/Second guessing just about everything sings Matt Flegel to open the album, in a song called Anxiety. Internal stress marks every track, in phrases like spinning in a vacuum, falling into mania, so close to exhaustion, overwhelmed, and it’s coming from all angles. By its words alone, Preoccupations reads like fodder for major therapy.
The band’s second LP (and first under the Preoccupations name) is a unique mix of the anxious and atmospheric, where tense, almost dreadful moods ( Anxiety, Sense ) sit side by side with shimmering ballads that bring to mind goth-adjacent bands like Echo & The Bunnymen ( Monotony, Memory ). It’s a darker, more romantic sound than Viet Cong, but just as sharp.
Preoccupations is a Canadian post-punk band from Calgary, Alberta, formed in 2012 under the name Viet Cong. The band consists of Matt Flegel (vocals, bass), Scott Munro (guitar, synth), Daniel Christiansen (guitar) and Mike Wallace (drums). In 2010, the band Women entered an indefinite hiatus after an onstage fight. That band's guitarist, Christopher Reimer, died in 2012
Preoccupations is focused on songcraft. The freewheeling, spiky abstractions peppered throughout the band’s earlier work as Viet Cong and Women are all but absent. While not exactly slick, the album has the polished dynamism of studio pop, its hooks varnished for maximum impact. Exclaim! Preoccupations are steadying their footing here, both growing up and grounding themselves sonically.
Complete your Preoccupations collection. I badly wanted to love this record. I mean, the Psychedelic Furs meets Death Cab for Cutie, post-punk meets math rock.
Album Preoccupations. Necessary but against your better judgments You were being overcharged in the market square Overwhelmed and it’s coming from all angles You were entertaining the idea that it wasn’t fair. Clocking in at over 11 minutes, Memory is the longest song on Preoccupations. It has three distinct movements: an intro sung by frontman Matt Flegel, an interlude fronted by Dan Boeckner (of Wolf Parade, Handsome Furs, Divine Fits and Operators), and a droning fade-out. What have the artists said about the song?
