Nickelback’s second album sees the Canadian rockers begin to step away from the Nirvana-wannabes that they were, and slowly become the band we’d all come to know and love (and mostly hate). While I found their debut too much of a grunge record way after grunge’s time had expired, ‘The State’ sees them develop a more traditional hard rock style, particularly with the guitar playing, and with frontman Chad Kroeger sounding more like himself than a fake Kurt Cobain. The formula is simple . However, it will come at a cost. But listening to ‘The State’, who’d imagine they’re listening to one of the biggest and most (in)famous bands on the planet? The State is the second studio album by Canadian rock band Nickelback. The album was released on September 4, 1998 via The All Blacks . Leader of Men was released as lead single from the album, followed by Old Enough, Breathe and Worthy to Say. Producer Dale Penner. Executive Producer Ken Grant. Producers Dale Penner & Nickelback.
Nickelback released their demo album Hesher under Platano Records in 1996. After getting some buzz with Hesher, Nickelback signed with Roadrunner records, and in 1996 came out with major record debut Curb. Then March 7th 2000, they created sophmore album The State. An album that would have them start to infiltrate mainstream rock stations with single Leader Of Men. In 2002 Nickelback was playing their second song at the Ilha do Ermal festival in Portugal on August 19, 2002, when Chad Kroeger was suddenly sprayed with a full bottle of water, hurled from somewhere within the crowd.
Fans of Jimmy Eat World, Drowning Pool, Godsmack, . and Stroke 9 will likely get into Nickelback, but little distinguishes them from so many other moderately bombastic rockers with acoustic leanings. And the inclusion of an acoustic version of "Leader of Men" would be more impressive if the song were not so bland and still strangely familiar. Old Enough" may actually be familiar to the few who own the soundtrack to Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows. The State is a dull example of alternative generica.
