Peter King is self-taught and played with fifteen years until clarinet, then switched to the alto saxophone as his main instrument. His debut as a professional musician, he had in 1959 in the London jazz club Ronnie Scott; In the same year he was honored by the Melody Maker as New Star. Then he played as a sideman on countless sessions, especially in the British bebop scene; 1960/61, he was a member of the orchestra by John Dankworth, played in the big bands of Maynard Ferguson, Tubby Hayes, Harry South and Stan Tracey, also in smaller formations with Philly Joe Jones, Zoot Sims, Al Cohn, Red.
