Springsteen, who took the stage around 8:30 PM in black jeans and a black T-shirt, welcomed the 3,000 lucky fans in attendance with, We’re going to run through some things, some new things, some old things. There may be some mistakes - but I doubt it. The band played twenty-one songs in two hours, including Born to Run, Candy’s Room, No Surrender and new single Radio Nowhere, off Springsteen’s newest album Magic, which hits stores next week. The record for the longest E Street Band show was set in 2012 in Helsinki, Finland. Joined once again by a string section, Springsteen kicked things off with an ode to the tri-state area with New York City Serenade. Are you ready to gamble with E Street band tonight? he asked, adding that the group was going to play songs not performed the previous two nights. Sticking with that promise, Springsteen led the band through Blinded by the Light, Does this Bus stop at 82nd Street, and It’s So Hard to be a Saint in the City. He was spot-on chastising Springsteen, I’d like to help you son, but you’re too young to vote. While the earlier songs were odes to the Big Apple, New Jersey was rewarded with 4th of July Asbury Park (Sandy) and a nod to fans from the shore. This is a beautiful night we got tonight, he said. This is as good as New Jersey gets right here.
The E Street Band arrive for another deep cut: Seeds, from the Born In The USA sessions. At which point, it seems like all bets are off. But the River tour has been remarkable for a number of reasons. What began as a plan to play The River in its entirety, complemented by a selection of catalogue cuts has now become a broader celebration of Springsteen’s songs, with tracks from The River album at its core. It’s possible to view the original iteration of The River tour as a reflective experience for Springsteen. After which, we’re told, there is a new solo album to come. What that will consist of is as yet known, but it’s tempting to wonder whether Springsteen will finally turn the focus inward and look at himself, as he passes his mid-sixties. Bruce Springsteen and E Street Band guitarist Steven Van Zandt. The rock band ramalamas are particularly pulverising tonight. Crush on You, one of Springsteen’s thinner songs, becomes a deliciously rough, full-blooded piece of garage rock. Sherry Darling is delivered with similar dirt and heat
