Eric Clapton recorded The Road to Escondido, a collaborative effort with his laconic idol . Cale, in 2006 but the pair didn't play supporting concerts due to Cale's aversion of touring. He wound up showing up for one show: a date near his home in San Diego, playing five songs on March 15, 2007 at the iPayOne Center. That guest set forms the heart of 2016's Live in San Diego, a double-disc live album released three years after Cale's death. Effectively, this marks Clapton's second tribute to Cale since .
Eric Clapton has announced a new live album, Live in San Diego. The album, which was recorded March 15, 2007, at San Diego's iPayOne Center, features several appearances-and compostions-by JJ Cale. At the time, Clapton and Cale-Clapton's good friend and mentor-were casually supporting their new studio album, 2006's Road to Escondido. This is the realization of what may have been my last ambition: to work with the man whose music has inspired me for as long as I can remember, Clapton said of Road to Escondido in 2006. Cale died July 26, 2013.

Eric Clapton will put out his 23rd solo album, I Still Do, this spring. The singer teamed with producer Glyn Johns, who has previously worked with the Rolling Stones, Eagles, Led Zeppelin and the Who and on Clapton’s own 1977 LP, Slowhand, home of the hits Cocaine, Wonderful Tonight and Lay Down Sally. The new record will come out on May 20th via Clapton’s own Bushbranch imprint, in association with Surfdog Records. This was a long and overdue opportunity to work with Glyn Johns again, and also, incidentally, the 40th anniversary of Slowhand, Clapton said in a statement
