From Sir Arthur Sullivan and Edward German onwards Britain has produced many fine composers of light music but none has been finer than Eric Coates (1886-1957). With a solid background of playing the viola in orchestras conducted by some of the most eminent conductors of the age he quickly established himself as a composer with an astonishing facility for writing memorable tunes. But there was much more to him than that : he had a consummate orchestral technique that could create one wonderfully-crafted work after another. This double album from Classics for Pleasure includes all the favourite melodies that made Eric Coates a musical household name in the post-war years and (deservedly) for some time afterwards. Even today he's still played regularly on Classic FM, and occasionally on Radio 3.

Eric Coates was a highly successful and much-loved figure on the English musical scene between the First World War and the 1950s. His niche was as a composer of light classics, in the tradition of Johann Strauss before him, and the younger American Leroy Anderson. Coates' music, which consisted primarily of brief orchestral works - waltzes, marches, serenades, romances, elegies, and other character pieces, as well as some larger pieces and vocal music - seems dated in a way that the music of Strauss and Anderson doesn't.
