The Aerosol Grey Machine is the debut studio album by English progressive rock band Van der Graaf Generator. It was released in 1969 by record label Mercury. The album was originally intended as a solo album by the band's lead singer and main songwriter, Peter Hammill. When the band signed with Charisma Records, a deal was worked out whereby The Aerosol Grey Machine would be released under the Van der Graaf Generator name, in return for Mercury Records releasing Hammill from his earlier contract with it.

Producer – Van Der Graaf Generator (tracks: A1). Producer, Liner Notes – John Anthony. Vocals, Acoustic Guitar – Peter Joseph Andrew Hammill. The Aerosol Grey Machine ‎(LP, Album, MP, Promo).

We made "The Aerosol Grey Machine". And it was in the Trident Studios because I liked Ken Scott, who had worked as a sound technician on "A Salty Dog" of Procul Harum. But Scott was working only with the biggest producers, so they gave me Robin Cable who was even better, and in fact he recorded all Elton John's albums". In fact, the quintet first published in 1969 with "People You Were Going To" a single, in which, from today's point of view, especially the B-side "Firebrand", a weird duet Hammill with the then co-founder Chris Judge Smith, points out where the band could have moved, it would not have been resolved immediately.

Aerosol Grey Machine" is short joke song little in vein of Emerson Lake & Palmer's "Benny The Bouncer", being a really terrible in my opinion, making me think why to title the whole album with such piece? "Black Smoke Yen" is another short one with jumpy rhythm for the dance of piano and bass guitar, morphing to "Aquarian". In a rare moment of strange happenstance, I agree with Van Der Graaf Generator fans: no, I do not like this album very much either! Weird, huh? Not that there’s anything wrong with the album.
