Early on Carll focused more on telling other people's stories than his own. Now, he has a sweet collection of new songs called What It Is where he tells his own. Hayes Carll. 13 June at 12:59 ·. to when I got to sing Paradise with John Prine at lystrictlybluegrass in San Francisco. John is on my Mount Rushmore of songwriters and I was over the moon when I got to open a show for him in late 2007. He generously asked if I would sing with him for the encore. I was ecstatic but then soon disappointed when the venue strictly enforced their curfew before the encore could happen
Hayes Carll on Harnessing Humor, Dance-Hall Vibe of New Album 'What It Is'. For What It Is, the Texas songsmith marshals all his storyteller modes. And maybe to tap into the aforementioned world of stories, he’s brought in other writing voices, more than usual. In moments like these, the showman and the soul man in Carll come together in new harmony. On Times Like These, a rowdy country-rocker about the travails of a working man, the singer takes his emotional temperature and perhaps the planet’s too: It’s so hard to tell if this is heaven or hell and I can never measure by degrees/But it’s sure getting warm around here in times like these. Polemics are mostly sly, and better for it. Wild Pointy Finger is a judge-not exercise with witty turns ( I’ve got ten digits like most other people/I can build the church but I can’t hold the steeple.
A large percentage of my fan base wants to drink beer and have something to dance to," says the Texas songwriter. For someone so well known for his storytelling, Hayes Carll is a man of few words. But on Carll’s new LP, What It Is, the Texas singer-songwriter decided to focus on what he felt rather than what sounded best.

Hayes Carll felt "disconnected in a lot of different ways" as he began writing songs for his new album, What It Is, whose tracks "Times Like These" and "Be There" premiere exclusively below. Suffice to say that the Nashville singer-songwriter not only reconnected but came to grips in a big way with a gamut of feelings on the 12-song set. "I think the starting point for me is I'm a songwriter and I’m writing about my life. It's what I do," Carll, a multiple Americana Music Awards winner, tells Billboard
What It Is. The first time I saw Hayes Carll live was more than 10 years ago at a party at a BBQ joint hosted by the state of Texas. Carll sang his tunes about misfits, drunkards, and hard livin' to a somewhat straight-laced crowd that featured Governor Rick Perry, who guffawed at the humor in Carll's lyrics. Carll ignored the hypocrisy of Perry sympathizing with life's losers. In fact, Carll avoided making eye contact with anyone in attendance. He didn't seem squeamish as much as unsure about how exactly he should act.
There are so many good lines on What It Is, Texas singer-songwriter Hayes Carll’s sixth album, I don’t know where to begin. How about: In times like these, everyone could use a hand, instead of standing round, losing ground, fighting for the promised land. But more than that, more than Carll’s dust-dry Texas delivery, this album knows how to rock when it needs to rock, dance when it needs to dance, and lean in close when Carll needs to promise-as on the touching closing track- I will stay. It knows when the mood could use a little brass ( Things You Don’t Want to Know ), when it calls for strings ( American Dream ), and when all it needs is a solid fingerpicked acoustic guitar (which appears on various songs).
