It could be argued that since the works in question are a Requiem and a Stabat Mater, this is the only appropriate interpretive choice. Others might counter that while the tempos should be on the slow side, they should not shudder to a grinding halt so often, and that while the textures should be on the heavy side, they should not have consistency of mud.

Stabat Mater (Op. 58, originally Op. 28, B. 71) for soloists, choir and orchestra is an extended sacred cantata by the Czech composer Antonín Dvořák based on the text of the Latin Stabat Mater sequence. The work was sketched in 1876 and completed in 1877. Dvořák began the composition of Stabat Mater in 1875, six month after the death of his daughter, Josefa, who was only two days old. He chose the work, unusually for him, without a commission.

Antonín Dvořák - Requiem, op. 89: Offertorium: Domine Jesu Christe Requiem, op. 89: Offertorium: Domine Jesu Christe Antonín Dvořák. Antonín Dvořák: Stabat Mater.

Dvořák naturally gave a great deal of attention to the genre of the oratorio, and it was his work in this area that firmly established his reputation in the English-speaking world. Rossini very much admired Pergolesi’s fine setting of the Stabat Mater, but had not felt equal to attempting his own. The decision to try came as a result of a plea from a Spanish prelate, Fernández Varela, who wished to possess an original Rossini manuscript. However, Rossini succumbed to an attack of lumbago and had given the score to Giovanni Tadolini to complete
