The Chemical Brothers don't have a lot of anything they have to demonstrate to anybody at this stage in their profession, yet on their eighth studio exertion, they demonstrate the world they can at present make a genuine case to electronic music's metal ring. The Chemical Brothers’ first album, Exit Planet Dust, was released when I was 4 years old. Twenty years have since passed, and I am both older and wiser. My appreciation for electronic music has affected how I approach and listen to music, including the classics. Though I cannot say that I grew up with The Chemical Brothers, I can proudly say that I know of and greatly appreciate and respect their work and lasting influence. Born In The Echoes, the eponymous track from the album, is more nostalgia than novelty. It feels old and tired, a repeated attempt at ’80s synth rock that just didn’t quite make the cut 30 years ago, and still doesn’t today. However, again, it doesn’t feel like The Chemical Brothers, but rather a distant relative.

The Chemical Brothers are arguably one of the most important groups in dance history. Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons’ peerless ‘Dig Your Own Hole’ introduced rock and psychedelia to dance music’s palette in 1997, and they pioneered combining indie vocalists with big beats on early records like scorching Noel Gallagher collaborations ‘Setting Sun’ (1997) and ‘Let Forever Be’ (1999). But for a while in the 2000s, they threatened to become one of the most predictable. During an underwhelming run from 2002’s ‘Come With Us’ to 2007’s ‘We Are The Night’, you knew what to expect: guest singers like Kele. Collaborators return for ‘Born In The Echoes’, the pair’s eighth album and first since ‘Further’. But here the Brothers largely bend the singers to their will, their voices subservient to the power of the songs.

It's a shame that people don't really care for this album. Personally, I've been a fan of their more melodic tunes and this Album has multiple tracks that just hit you right in the feels. I haven't had any issues with my copy. All 4 sides sound crisp. Good stuff.
  • Tantil
what an album!!! wow!! Boom Chemical Brothers _/_ listening and re-listening and loving it more and more all the times. Hope the brothers keep releasing greatness through music always :) BooM

Vinyl is very, very heavy. Probably the heaviest records I've come across. They sound great but side C had gunk actually pressed into the vinyl. It initially wouldn't play through and skipped. I carefully scraped it off with my fingernail and cleaned it several times. There is a small divet in the vinyl where the dirt had been pressed into it but I was able to get it to play and do not notice any skipping now. I was happy to get this to play through, but geez, what's up with quality control these days?
  • Saithinin
I was also really surprised with this album. Their worst work ever. Pity they diverted so much from their original style.
  • Grillador
Are all of the pressings with electric clicking on side C? I bought damn 2 copies in different stores at different periods in time and they all have these electric static clicks on side c only
  • Goll
Anybody else just cracking up about the run-out etchings of this record?

Man, what happened to these guys? It seems that after they released 'Dig Your Own Hole', they abandoned their signature Big Beat sound and shifted more toward House and Electro with each album having a more crappy sound to it, for a lack of better words. And I hate saying it because I've been a fan of the Chemical Bothers since their inception. I remember they used to be one of the biggest names in the industry and had a cutting edge sound that no other artist could come close to touching. But then they released 'Surrender', and they've never gone back to the Big Beat sound. Now I know that the Genre has shifted and Big Beat isn't as popular as it was back in the mid to late nineties, but that is what put these guys on the map along with other artists such as 'The Prodigy' and 'The Crystal Method'. And again, I know it's not easy to put this kind of music together or to come up with it from scratch. It's just kind of sad to hear what these guys have become when it's compared to their earlier albums.

Anyone's copy have a MADE IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC sticker?

"Sometimes I Feel So deserted" is the one minute, filler song that turned into a full track. It's kind of hard to listen to though because it sound like each instrument is 'playing to it's own rhythm' in a way that you can't keep in time with the song. Clearly deserving of the name: "Some Times I Feel So Deserted"."Go" has got to be the best track on that album. It sounds like 'Galvanize' only with less 'Trip Hop' and more 'pop'. Now a lot of you might hear the word pop and immediately think to yourself, "CRAP", but trust me, I heard this song before I even knew it was the chemical Brothers and even even though I despise Pop, I still liked this song!"Under Neon Lights" is a little redundant but It still sounds ok. It has a similar vibe to the song, "Do It Again", only with less samples and more female singers."I'll See You There" SCREAMS, "we are trying to get back to our psychedelic roots!", and it rather does a great job at accomplishing that task, only rather than using powerful chords and lots of small, additive melodies, they use a glitchy off-key lead and erie, reversed samples of singing"EML Ritual" Is Basically the same as the first song on this album only with a darker feeling to it. The best part of the song is definitely the ending, the lead up might take a long time but It is worth it."Just Bang" is not that good (in my opinion). It sounds like they made audio scrapple with all of the synths, samples, and drums that they didn't like."Reflection" I think was the song that the Chems were counting on being the most popular on this album. The only thing I have to complain about however is that on one section of the song, it sounds like they try to add to the 'mass' of the lead synth by distorting the it to the point of almost silencing all of the other instruments, but it only comes out sounding like they made an error when they were equalizing the song.Taste Of Honey is the filler song and it is worse than Playground Of A Wedge-less Firm. it sounds like they took a trap song, stripped it of it's beat, and replaced the rapper with a singer that sounds like a sample that they forgot to set to the right pitch.Radiate Is the one mellow, happy song that is (for some reason) on every single Chemical Brothers album but other than that it is nothing special.Wide Open is amazing, just a very well put together track. The melody Is sad but great, the vocals don't seem out of place, and is just a great song altogether. It is most certainly worthy of the 'big finish' track for this album (which also is (for some reason) on every Chemical Brothers album). If I could come up with one complaint for this song, However, It would be that it does not really sound like a "Chemical Brothers" track ( then again, not a lot of tracks on this album do)

"(...) it sound[s] like each instrument is 'playing to it's own rhythm' in a way that you can't keep in time with the song."This is actually part of what makes abstract and complex sounds a potential intellectual stimulation.
  • Tygrarad
This album is Chemical Brothers through and through.Refreshingly minimalist after the bombastic Further, which was fantastic in very different way. This album cuts things back, almost forcing you to hear every moment of the production process. There are obvious highlights, but really the album is laid out traditionally so that every track is best complimented by the tracks prior and preceding it. Excellent album.
  • Winawel
most of the people that hate this album literally only hate it because it's new. le wrong generation fags. anyways, this album is just about anything you could want from a new chem lp, banging tracks, good vocal features, and interesting use of psychedelic sound design and melodies.
  • Maximilianishe
I would say that this is a gross simplification. In reality, disappointment is understandable, if it has to do with certain aspects not being up to their standards. The break at the one minute mark in "Go" for example is incredibly cheesy. The vocals seem well made, but they appear to be a risky undertaking at the same time. While there appears to be a somewhat intriguing basis underneath "Sometimes I Feel So Deserted", it is not enough to prevent that release from feeling too commercial overall.
  • Redfury
please do, fam.At least 10 words must be entered. Please enter at least 7 more.
  • Tto
ooh, nasty...this album is even worse than "Further", the only two first tracks are acceptable
  • Neol
I agree...Why did they abandon the House Beat from the first 3 records ? This is what Chemicals should be about. Thankfully their comeback with the last "C-H-E-M-I-C-A-L" single is much welcomed...
  • Hellmaster
My copy is mislabelled (vinyl 1, side A label both on sides A and B). Received it directly from Chems web store. Anyone else with the same issue?
  • Rolorel
Yup, got the same thing. Also ordered directly from the chems website.
  • Sharpbrew
As a huge fan of theirs, I must say that this album isn't their best work. However, "I'll See You There" is nothing but pure classic Chemical Brothers brand psychedelia at its best!
  • Pruster
Taste Of Honey!!! 8)
  • Gavikelv
The worst album of the group. Selfexpluatation was also in Further. But Further has something intresting. There is nothing interesting. Unfortunately
  • Drelahuginn
Totally agree with you....This is indeed the worst album of all from Chems. It's a pity they have abandoned their cool meloudious tunes from the first four albums. "Come with Us" was the last good album of theirs and "Swoon" the last cool typical Chems track ! Surprisingly they've just released "CHEMICAL" single that is a great comeback to their funky style..
  • kewdiepie
Totally agree. "Wide Open" is probably the best track on this but sadly doesn't sound anything like a Chemical Brothers track.People complained about Further back then but Further is a masterpiece compared to this.
  • I ℓ٥ﻻ ﻉ√٥υ
Agreed vmoreton. Further was excellent, their best since Come With Us. I think this album could be even better.
  • Avarm
Respect is the word you should use for The Chemical Brothers´ new album. Probably their best issue since 2001 "Come With Us". I agree that they repeat the same formula they employed to convert electronic music in a cultural product for masses, which seems to be nowadays. Such a unique combination of electronic beats (from techno to house passing through ambient), pop phychedelic lyrics and rock melodies has been an influence on many musicians and bands over the last 20 years. However, nobody has been able to produce that said combination in the way The Chems have done to transmit such emotion hearind their music. Even my father, a jazz drug addict, loves The Chems. Aren´t great hits songs like "Sometimes I Feel So Desserted", "EML Ritual", "I´ll See You There", "Reflexion" or "Wide Open"?
  • Camper
The lyrics are a bit odd, but the bonus track Direct Buki is just an acid banger! Kicks me back in the golden days of the 90s synth music.

These are for sale on the Japanese HMV site for about $30 Aus
