Glenn Dicterow – violin New York Philharmonic Giuseppe Sinopoli – conductor. Richard Strauss was arguably the greatest composer of what we often call the "symphonic tone poem. Often composed with extremely large orchestras in mind, not to mention often brooding subject matter, these tone poems, composed at the height of late German romanticism near the end of the 19th century and into the first decades of the 20th century, were not only incredible orchestral showcases, but also pieces that laid the groundwork for many of the biggest works.

Also sprach Zarathustra prepares to take its leave and the orchestra ascends towards the outer reaches of the cosmos. Strauss plotted the compositional flight paths of his earlier tone-poems – Don Juan, Till Eulenspiegel, Tod und Verklärung – around explicit narrative markers but in Zarathustra the challenge was to transmute Nietzsche’s abstract, high-minded philosophy into musical specifics: enveloping tonal relationships, notes to be written on the stave. Rarely has a piece been so indelibly associated with orchestral history. In 1958 Karl Böhm recorded his version in the same venue, e in Berlin, as Karajan, and with Michel Schwalbé leading.

Death and Transfiguration (Tod und Verklärung), Op. 24, is a tone poem for large orchestra by Richard Strauss. Strauss began composition in the late summer of 1888 and completed the work on 18 November 1889. The work is dedicated to the composer's friend Friedrich Rosch. New York Philharmonic. Christoph von Dohnányi. Also sprach Zarathustra.
