Tom Sankey Sings The Songs From The Golden Screw ‎(LP).

The Golden Screw was an Off-Off-Broadway folk rock musical written and performed by Tom Sankey which premiered at the Theatre Genesis in September 1966. It ran again from January 30, 1967 to March 5, 1967 at the Provincetown Playhouse in Greenwich Village. The show's cast album was the first rock theatrical recording of its kind. The play follows a Bob Dylanesque singer figure from folk music roots to commercialization.

Ira David Sankey, son of David Sankey, known as the father of Lawrence County, and Mary Leeper Sankey, was born August 28, 1840, in Edinburg, on the outskirts of New Castle, Pennsylvania. When Sankey was 16, he was converted at a revival meeting at the King's Chapel United Methodist Church, which was about three miles away from his home. When he was young, Sankey served in the Civil War. Afterward, he took employment at the IRS, and also the YMCA. He became increasingly well known as a Gospel singer, and eventually attracted the attention of noted evangelist Dwight L. Moody.

Ira Sankey died with Gospel on his lips, having abandoned his sensible career for a life dedicated to God and surrounded by music. That enthusiasm is transmitted via the page and the colorful, emotively drenched lyrics to the reader. With the love of God in their mouths, Sankey hoped that the world would also take it into their hearts. The jury remains out on his main objective but what is certain is that Ira himself went straight to the heart of Gospel music
