It was released on the album Beatles for Sale in the United Kingdom in December 1964.

The 12th track on the Beatles forth album (UK). One of the less heralded songs on the album, nevertheless it marked, together with other (the first three) songs from the album, John Lennon’s becoming more reflective and personal in his song writing. It was left out of the US version of the album, presumably due to its depressive lyric. owever, it gained some recognition in the US as the B-side of their seventh no. 1 top charting singles, Eight Days a Week, reaching the top 40 due to its playing time.

The Beatles recorded I Don't Want To Spoil The Party on 29 September 1964. They taped in 19 takes, although just five of those were complete. One of the weaker Beatles' singles. The guitar fanfare beginning 'Eight Days a Week' is glorious in its way, but the pop following is curiously uninspired. 'I Don't Want to Spoil the Party' is pleasant enough, if you can ignore all of the self-pity. Before I catch flak from Beatles' fanatics, I should note that a 'weak' Beatle single is preferable to most band's better selections.

capitol records decided to release this as a single. in the UK it was filler on side two of beatles for sale, but we didn't know that here in the US at the time. things got better a few months later when ticket to ride came out and then help! in the summer of 65
