When David Geffen convinced Richie Furay, Chris Hillman, and . Crosby, Stills & Nash's folk-rock had scored big with a similar idea, while bands such as the Eagles, who recorded for Geffen's Asylum Records, had made some waves commercially in recent years.

From the start, this alliance of three mismatched country-rock talents seemed a dubious proposition, and though The y Band’s 1974 self-titled debut does have merit, it fails to cohere into a unified statement. The best way to appreciate the album is by sampling the individual contributions of its members.
